Depending on the college and classes you plan to take, you need to check the prerequisites and requirements inherent to the acceptance of the course.
Prerequisite. Required prior class in advance of the next class to a higher level. For example, you have to take a beginning Spanish class before signing up for Spanish II, it's a prerequisite.
Requirement. Academic test that must be satisfied before or during enrollment in a desired class. English Proficiency Requirements must be demonstrated before enrolling in certain classes.
Most U.S. colleges and universities need to evaluate your oral and written English as a Second Language (ESL) level to determine whether you will be able to follow a class in English. The test that is frequently used to evaluate English is the TOEFL (Test of English as a Second Language). Remember that Caltech offers free English classes to its community.
If you are applying to business school, you will need to complete the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). If you are applying for general graduate admission, you may need to complete the GRE (Graduate Record Examination). The LSAT (Law School Admissions Test) is required for a law school application.
